Fans of Siri Mitchell will love her newest novel, “Love Comes Calling.” Set in the 1920’s, this book is light-hearted and entertaining in tone, yet it probes deeply the theme of a country attempting (and failing) to legislate morality. While Ms. Mitchell explores this theme from the historical context of Prohibition, the relevancy of this subject is clearly applicable to national issues today. “Love Comes Calling” is also unique in its perspective, as the main character, Ellis, is portrayed with ADHD. Here another theme emerges; how we view ourselves and how others view us, and the resulting relational conflict that these sometimes opposing views can create. Some readers may be exhausted by Ellis’s non-stop, stream-of-thought rambling, but I found it entertaining and insightful. As always, I’m impressed with Ms. Mitchell’s ability to capture the historical atmosphere- in this case, the Roaring 20’s and the unprecedented changes that occurred in American culture during that era, as well as her skill for developing dynamic characters. This book is considered Christian historical romance, but it’s very light on the spiritual side, with far greater emphasis on the historical and psychological. I enjoyed “Loves Comes Calling” as a quick and entertaining read with enough food for thought to give it some substance.
